== Life ==
Vladimir Slamecka was born in Czechoslovakia in 1928. Following the communist takeover of the country he was barred, in 1949, from continuing his studies. He continued his education in physical sciences and logic at St. Paul's College (University of Sydney, 1952-54) and sociology at the University of Munich (1955). Under the guidance of Mortimer Taube, who was affiliated with the School of Library Service at Columbia University, Slamecka built out an interdisciplinary doctorate (DLS) course of study that included logic, computer science, and librarianship.

== Contributions ==
Slamecka was recruited in 1964 to build a graduate program in information and computer science (ICS) at Georgia Institute of Technology, and was the founding director of the School of Information and Computer Science. Influenced by [[Vannevar Bush]]’s vision in “As We May Think," he sought to develop an interdisciplinary curriculum in information science focusing on the design and development of socially responsive information systems. He focused on theoretical research in information science (semiotics, theory of information systems, human information processing) and computer science (theory of computing, programming languages, database systems, advanced algorithms). By the mid-1970s the school included faculty with backgrounds in linguistics, human information processing, operations research, library science, and computer science. The curriculum included courses in artificial intelligence (AI) and pattern recognition.

After secondary education in Paris and Brussels, he studied at the Catholic University of Leuven and the Free University of Brussels, he earned a law degree in 1890. Becoming dissatisfied he developed his interest in bibliography. His essay "Un peu de bibliographie" [Something about bibliography], written in 1892 laid out pans which he followed for the rest of his life.

In 1895 Otlet and Henri La Fontaine founded an International Institute for Bibliography which later became the International Institute for Documentation. He died on December 10, 1944 in Brussels.

Otlet, supported by his wealthy second wife, Cato Van Nederhesselt, whom he married in 1912, was a tireless author, organizer, developer of bibliographical services, and peace activist. He is best known for his promotion of universal documentation and as co-founder and leader of the International Institute for Bibliography, later named the [[International Federation for Documentation]].

Otlet founded numerous ambitious international organizations generally in collaboration with [[Henri LaFontaine]].

This resource is designed to enable historical work in the field by identifying pioneering individuals and organizations significant to the development of Information Science, and providing locations of personal papers and archival records related to these individuals and organizations.

This directory is a publication of the Special Interest Group on the [https://www.asist.org/sig/sighfis/ History and Foundations of Information Science] of the [https://www.asist.org/ Association for Information Science and Technology]. The Editor is appointed by and reports to the Chair of the SIG. An [[Advisory Committee]] appointed by the Editor makes recommendations to the Editor and to the SIG Chair.

"Pioneers of Information Science" was initiated by Dr. Robert V. Williams, Distinguished Professor, Emeritus, School of Library and Information Science, University of South Carolina in 1996. The objectives of that project were to locate and document the archives and personal papers of individuals and organizations from the U.S. and Canada that were significant to the development of Information Science and Technology in the 20th century.

Claude Shannon's contributed to and influenced circuitry, computing, cryptography, artificial intelligence, and much more. His communication theory built on two insights: (i) That information reflects choices made; and thus reduces uncertainty and (ii) that information is inversely proportional to the amount of uncertainty. Further, probability can be used as a measure of uncertainty.

Shannon was concerned with the engineering problem of transmitting a message and he was explicit that his theory had nothing to do with ''meaning''. "These semantic aspects of communication are irrelevant to the engineering problem," he wrote.

In 1953 he enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, and graduated in 1957 with a BS in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in computers. In 1963 he earned an MS in Industrial engineering, specializing in computer technology at Stanford University.

His professional interests include the analysis, automation, and evaluation of library and other information services.

From 1957 to 1966, Bourne was a research engineer at the Computer Systems Lab at the Stanford Research Institute. He was Vice-President, Information General Corporation, 1966-68, then President, Bourne & Associates 1968-71. In 1971 he became a professor at the School of Librarianship (later the School of Information) and Director of the Institute for Library Research.

Bendikson was influenced by [[John Shaw Billings]], a former Surgeon General of the USA, who was responsible for the consolidation of the New York Public Library in 1910. They had come into contact at the New York Academy of Medicine.

In 1920 Bendikson joined the staff of the New York Public Library, then after six years, he joined the staff of the private library of the railroad magnate Henry E. Huntington in New York in February of 1916. Bendikson was one of the first to join the staff and and moved with it to its new building in San Marino, California, where he established a photographic laboratory in 1921 and developed and publicized photographic techniques for documentary reproduction, restoration, and forensic analysis.
