Domènec Turuguet i Mayol (1924-2003) was an information scientist and chemist specializing in toxicology.

Life

Domènec Turuguet i Mayol was born in Barcelona, Spain [city to be confirmed], in January 1924. As a child, he contracted polio, which required him to use crutches for the remainder of his life. Despite this, he possessed a warm and cheerful personality, and was well-regarded by all his colleagues. He was a regular participant at professional conferences, where he consistently contributed valuable insights.

Domènec Turuguet i Mayol graduated with a degree in Chemical Sciences, but his professional career focused on Information Science at the Barcelona Research and Development Center of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Subsequently, shortly after the launch of the National Occupational Safety and Health Plan (1971), he joined the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (INSHT). At the National Documentation Center (CND) —a leading resource in Spain, Latin America, and Europe for occupational health information— he developed a substantial body of work that served most professionals working in the field of occupational risk.

Turuguet was a founding member of the Societat Catalana de Documentació i Informació (SOCADI), established in Barcelona in 1984.

On August 4th 1956 he married Maria Martori Domènech (1923-2009). The couple had no children. Domènec Turuguet died in 2003.

Notes:

1. Domènec Turuguet signed most of his works as "Domingo Turuguet," since this was his official name, as stated on his birth certificate. With the death of the dictator Franco in 1975, Catalans began to freely use their names in Catalan, but there was a transition period of several years during which authors used both versions, until they generally settled on the Catalan one.
2. In recent years, some Catalan authors have revived an old custom of joining both surnames (father's and mother's) with the conjunction "i" (and). This custom is currently being promoted by official Catalan institutions. This practice was also adopted by Domènec Turuguet i Mayol in his later years, but it does not appear in his earlier works.

Domènec Turuguet edited Boletín Bibliográfico (1973-1986), later renamed Erga. Revista bibliográfica sobre condiciones de trabajo (1987-2020), a publication that became a benchmark in the field of occupational health knowledge management. In an era and country where research was limited, particularly in occupational health, Domènec Turuguet dedicated his efforts to systematizing, updating, and contextualizing knowledge, recognizing that a modern society must address its challenges related to scientific information and documentation. He was an expert in thesaurus development and terminology.
