Boyce served as the Department Chair for Information Science within the School of Library and Informational Science at the University of Missouri, in Columbia, Missouri. In 1983 he became faculty at Louisiana State University and became Dean of the School of Information Studies in July 1990.[https://doi.org/10.1016/0277-9390(91)90030-2] <br />

His research examines measurement and retrieval in information science, youth librarianship, and library resource access for rural communities. He developed DAPPOR, a drill and practice program for online retrieval in 1982 at the University of Missouri. He wrote frequently in the late 1980s to mid-90s with his wife Judith I. Boyce on the growth of the bookmobile as a way to provide outreach for rural libraries, and as advocates for subject classification in children sections of libraries. He contributed and served as Book Reviews Editor for ''JASIS'' in the 1980s and 90s.<br />
