Lluís Codina is an Honorary Professor and Researcher at Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona, Spain).

Lluís Codina was born in Barcelona, Spain, on 6 May 1955.

He began his academic career as a research fellow at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), where he completed his doctoral studies.

At the UAB, he gained his first experience as a predoctoral researcher and as a member of a competitive research project. He also undertook his first teaching activities in library and information science applied to journalism. His doctoral dissertation, defended at the UAB in 1993, addressed systems theory and audiovisual documentation.

Since joining Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), Barcelona, in 1991, he has served as Academic Secretary of UPF’s Faculty of Journalism, Director of the Teaching Innovation Unit within the same faculty, Director of the Master’s Degree in Communication Research, and Coordinator of the Digital Documentation and Interactive Communication Research Group.

He founded and is a member of the editorial team of the academic journal Hipertext.net (Web of Science). He has served as President of the Catalan Society for Information and Documentation (SOCADI) and as a member of the governing board of the Official Association of Librarians and Information Specialists of Catalonia. He has also been a member of the governing board of the Catalan Society for Communication, an affiliate of the Institute of Catalan Studies.

As part of his knowledge-transfer activities at Pompeu Fabra University, he developed the DigiDoc Editorial Series, the Observatory of Cybermedia, and the Communication Reports Collection.

He has also taken part in numerous publicly funded competitive research projects, serving as principal investigator on three consecutive research projects under the Spanish Ministry of Science’s National R&D&I Plan, as well as participating in research projects funded by the Government of Catalonia.

He evaluates academic careers for the Catalan Government’s quality-assurance agency (AQU) and research projects for Spain’s State Research Agency (AEI).

His contribution to researcher training is reflected in his supervision of 22 doctoral dissertations, 11 of them completed as publication-based theses.

He is also a significant contributor to open educational resources, having published dozens of teaching materials arising from his educational experience. These resources are available under Creative Commons (CC) licences in UPF’s official repository.

Contributions

Owing to his extensive research and knowledge-transfer activities, he is the author of nearly 200 articles in scholarly journals and the author or co-author of more than fifty books or monographs. His most significant contributions, in chronological order, have focused on documentation applied to the media, including both journalism and audiovisual communication. In this area, he has published articles, reports, and open teaching materials, which are available in UPF’s official repository.

He subsequently carried out extensive work in the field of methodologies, developing models for analysing digital resources based on a methodological proposal that has been adopted by numerous professionals and applied in several doctoral dissertations.

For many years, he has conducted intensive research and knowledge-transfer work on the use of SEO to improve the visibility of high-quality journalistic output. This work has advanced the idea that the best journalism requires ethical SEO in order to reach citizens.

His research interests and methodological contributions continued to develop in the field of literature reviews using systematic methods. Through his extensive dissemination and training activities, he became one of the pioneers in introducing scoping reviews in Spain.

Since the emergence of large language models (LLMs), he has developed an extensive body of research and knowledge-transfer activities focused on the use of AI in academic work. Particularly noteworthy are his contributions on the ethical use of AI in doctoral dissertations and scholarly articles, as reflected in numerous open-access publications available in UPF’s official repository. He has also delivered numerous lectures on the use of AI in academia at universities in Latin America and Spain. A substantial part of the materials used in these lectures is openly available in UPF’s official repository.

Awards
