Heidi Julien

Heidi Julien is a Canadian information science professor and scholar whose research focuses on human information behavior, information literacy, and theory used in information science. She is a recipient of the ASIST Award of Merit (2025).

Life

Julien was born and raised in Edmonton with three siblings.[1] Julien earned a Bachelor of Education with distinction in 1983 and a Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of Alberta in 1994. She completed her Ph.D. in Library and Information Science at the University of Western Ontario in 1997. Her dissertation was titled "How Does Information Help? The Search for Career-Related Information by Adolescents".

Contributions

Julien served as Lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand) (1996-1998) and then as Assistant Professor at Dalhousie University (1998-2001), before moving to the University of Alberta, her alma mater, where she served as Assistant Professor (2001-2004), Associate Professor (2004-2009) and then Professor (2009-2011). Julien moved to the University of Alabama and served as Professor and Director of the School of Library and Information Studies (2011-2013). Julien joined the University at Buffalo, Department of Information Science as a professor in 2013, where she served as Department Chair (2013-2019). At Buffalo, she is a member of the Center for Information Integrity.[2]

Julien researches digital literacy, information literacy, information behavior, and research methodologies in library and information science. She has given invited talks about her research in 13 countries.[3] She teaches graduate-level courses in theoretical foundations of information science, information practices, information literacy instruction, and research methods. She has served as President of the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) (2018-2019), and of the Canadian Association for Information Science (2015-2016). She served as Editor of Canadian Journal of Information and Library Science (2008-2010), among other editorial roles. She has served as P.I. of several SSHRC grants.

Julien is the namesake of the Dr. Heidi Julien Professional Development Award in Library and Information Studies bestowed annually to a University of Alberta, School of Library and Information Studies student presenting their research.[4]
