Swanson was a mathematician who developed an interest in library and information science. He worked at: Research, TRW Inc. 1955-63; Dean (1963-72/1977-79), and Prof., of the Graduate Library School, Univ. of Chicago. He completed early research and development work on library catalogs. He was involved in early operations research work.
