Engelbart invented many items that helped to revolutionize the computer industry, such as the "X-Y Position Indicator for a Display System" (the prototype of the computer mouse). He holds a total of 20 patents, 1 for the mouse, 7 for his work related to bi-stable gaseous plasma digital devices, and 12 for his work on all-magnetic digital devices. Engelbart also founded the Bootstrap Institute (now called the Doug Engelbart Institute), where he was an inventor and computer consultant before retiring in 2008.
