Ernest Abadal Falgueras
Ernest Abadal Falgueras is a professor and researcher at the University of Barcelona.
Life
Ernest Abadal Falgueras was born in Sallent, Catalonia, Spain, on June 28, 1962.
He was dean of the Faculty of Library and Information Science (since 2019 called Faculty of Information and Audiovisual Media, or, in Catalan, Facultat d'Informació i Mitjans Audiovisuals, FIMA) of the University of Barcelona between 2012 and 2018, and is one of the leading specialists on open access to science in Spain, as well as coordinator of several university research networks.
Since 2021 he is Vice-Rector for Teaching and Research Staff at the University of Barcelona.
He has been the principal investigator of several projects under Spain's National R&D&I Plan on open access to science, and is coordinator of the Maredata Thematic Network on research data. He has participated in national and international conferences. He has coordinated the Open Access to Science working group, which has produced results such as MELIBEA, a directory of open access policies, and DULCINEA, which identifies the editorial policies of Spanish scientific journals with regard to open access. https://www.accesoabierto.net/politicas , https://dulcinea.opensciencespain.org
He is the author of numerous research articles and several books. He is also one of the directors and driving forces behind the Blok de BiD project, which was published between 2010 and 2026, in which professionals from the world of information and documentation reviewed reports from international organizations.
As dean, he received the Creu de Sant Jordi (Cross of Saint George) from the Generalitat de Catalunya (regional government) in 2015, awarded to what was then called the Faculty of Library and Information Science "for the continuity of studies deeply engaged in the transformation of a profession that has known how to adapt to the needs of society." https://www.ub.edu/centenaribid/dega-facultat-recull-creu-sant-jordi

Ernest Abadal Falgueras is Spain's most prominent figure in the field of open access to science. He has thoroughly studied editorial policies and scientific repositories, additionally coordinating the Maredata Thematic Network on research data. His most visible contributions to the discipline are two reference tools: MELIBEA, a directory of open access policies, and DULCINEA, which analyzes the editorial policies of Spanish scientific journals.
