Life

Fred Alonzo Tate was born January 8, 1920 in Wisconsin. He completed a PhD in chemistry at Harvard University in 1951.

Tate worked as Manager, information science section, Wyeth Labs 1958-61, then at Chemical Abstracts Service as Assistant director 1961-70; Associate director 1970-1974; Associate director of planning and development from 1974. He was interested in data and information management systems, automated and manual information-handling systems, publishing systems for technical information, information utilization systems, and business management systems associated with foregoing areas. He died on November 19, 1980 in Columbus, Ohio.

Contributions

The American Chemical Society conferred its Skolnik Award to Fred Tate in 1978 "For conceiving, developing and implementing computer-based information-handling systems and procedures across the full-range of Chemical Abstract's (CAS) operations, which had provided prototypes for other secondary services, for his leadership in the development of the CAS Chemical Registry System, and for close international cooperation between the United Kingdom, West German, French, Japanese, and United States groups in the development and use of chemical information systems and services."
