Ingetraut Dahlberg

Ingetraut Dahlberg (1927-2017) was a German information scientist.

Life

Ingetraut Dahlberg, née Gessell, was a German information scientist, philosopher and librarian. She was born on February 20, 1927 in Cologne, Germany. In 1973 she received her doctorate in Philosophy from Düsseldorf University. Her dissertation Das universale Klassifikationssystem des Wissens, seine ontologischen, wissenschaftstheoretischen und informationstheoretischen Grundlagen [The universal classification system of knowledge, its ontological, epistemological and information-theoretical foundations].

Dahlberg held the following positions:

• Bibliographer, Atomic Energy Documentation Center, Gmelin Institute.
• 1963-1970: Head of the Library and Documentation Center of the German Documentation Society.
• 1964-1965: Groth Institute for Crystallographic Data Documentation, Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida.
• 1965-1970: Committee on Thesarus Research, German Documentation Society.
• 1967-1969: Chair of the Universal Decimal Classification Revision Committee for 03/04.

She retired in 1973 but remained active. She died on October 24, 2017 in Bad König, Odenwald.

Contributions

• The Information Coding Classification (ICC).
• Founded the Gesellschaft für Klassifikation (Society for Classification).
• Founded and was first President of the International Society for Knowledge Organization, 1989.
• Founded the journal International Classification (later Knowledge Organization).
