Israel A. Warheit

Israel Albert Warheit (1912-1973) was an American librarian.


Life

Israel Albert Warheit was born on December 12, 1912 in York, Ontario, Canada, and moved to the USA in 1927. He studied in modern languages at Michigan State Normal College (later named Eastern Michigan University) (AB, 1933); then Germanic languages and literatures at the University of Michigan, MA (1934) and PhD (1940) in German, and ABLS in 1940. He studied at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, 1935-1936.

Warheit was librarian, Allison Division of General Motors, Indianapolis, 1941-1946; Chief of library services, for the US Atomic Energy Commission, , Oak Ridge, Tennessee, 1946-1952; Head, Library department, Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago, 1952-1956; and Chief librarian, Atomic Energy Commission, Washington, DC.

In 1959, Warheit joined IBM's Advanced Systems Development Division in Washington, then in 1961 moved as Senior Systems Analyst to IBM in San Jose, California. He died on Feb 2, 1973 in Southfield, Michigan.

Contributions

Warheit specialized in the treatment of technical reports and the mechanization of library procedures.
