The National Science Foundation is a US Federal agency established in 1950 with a mission to "to promote the progress of science, to advance the national health, prospeity, and welfare, and to secure the national defense." It was based on proposals by Vannevar Bush and Harley Kilgore.
Contributions
The National Science Foundation (NSF) was the major U.S. government funder of projects in the 1950's and 1960's related to information retrieval, indexing, computer related methods, and general information science.

A multi-agency program in the 1990s.
Other individuals involved included Scott Adams, Burton W. Adkinson, Helen L. Brownson, Melvin S. Day, Madeline M. (Berry) Henderson and Seymour I. Taine.
